One of the most important tasks of the Strathcona Firefighters Honour
Guard is that of honouring fire and emergency medical service
personnel who perish
as
a result of their duties. For the past several years, the International
Association of Fire Fighters (I.A.F.F.) has continued to record
an overwhelming number
of line-of-duty deaths throughout the United States and Canada. On far
too many occasions, these totals become nothing more than statistics
and the focus
of what each of these numbers stands for is obscured. Be assured each
of the more than one hundred line-of-duty deaths recorded annually
represents someone’s
son or daughter; mother or father; and brother or sister.
In recognition of each one of these losses, the Strathcona Firefighters Honour
Guard has coordinated the design and construction of the Strathcona Fallen Firefighters
Memorial. The Memorial offers a perpetual tribute to all those who have lost,
or will lose their lives as they unselfishly respond to the needs of the communities
that they are proud to protect.
